Parent/Son Campout Packing/Prep

  •  This is a TENT CAMPING event:  All attenders must bring their own tent per family.  Scouts are permitted to double up, but ONLY with other scouts.  Adults are only permitted to bunk in the same tent with their son or other adults (without scouts) only.  If you need a tent or other equipment, let your den leader or other Pack leader know and we will do what we can to get the equipment you may need.

  • What TO bring:  Sleeping gear (sleeping bag, pillow, cot/inflatable mattress/ensolite pad), tent, tent drop cloth, clothing (day and night clothes) - weather appropriate (it may get cold at night), sunscreen and bug repellant, flashlight, rain gear (if forecasted).  Scouts will need their Class A uniform (shirt, kerchief, slide and belt) and Class B T-shirts (scout related T-shirts if you have them) for when not wearing your Class A uniform.  The Pack has a limited number of Pack related Class B T-shirts for purchase.

  • There is NO SMOKING IN TENTS at camp.  Smoking is permitted, but OUT OF SCOUT SIGHT.  Use extreme discretion if you must smoke in camp.

    • The Pack will be providing meals at the campsite (rather than meals in the camp mess).  This is included in your registration cost.  Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast will be provided.

    • There are planned activities for the scouts for the whole event.  However, parents must plan on chaperoning their son to his events throughout the day.

    • Knives will be permitted to be possessed and used by any scout who has earned his Whittling Chip AND who has his chip on his person.  No chip and his knife will be confiscated until after the campout.

    • There are pit toilets at the campsites, but there are a few flush tolilets at designated areas on the campground.  All campsites will have a (pit toilet) latrine with running hot water showers (if you need to take one) and running water sinks for simple hygiene needs (tooth brushing, etc.)

  • The schedule at camp is meant to promote time for you and your son.  Therefore, there will be activities, but they may be crowded.  This is a PARENT/SON event meant to promote time for you to be with your son, in the out of doors, enjoying what Camp Raven Knob has to offer.  You will be free to participate in the "offered" camp activities, but be prepared to do other things with your son, his den or the Pack that are not on the schedule.  Meals, however, are highly scheduled; so be on time to eat.  Otherwise, please use the weekend schedule to have a lot of fun WITH your son.

  • Activities at camp include:  BB guns, archery, rock wall climbing, hiking, fishing (bring your own poles), canoeing, crafts, nature walks, sling shots, lacrosse, whittling.

  • Parking at Camp Raven Knob is limited.  Try to carpool with others in your den.

  • A daypack or bookbag is recommended to carry stuff while hiking aroung the camp all day.  That way you can leave for the day and not worry about having what you may need and avoid what will most likely be quite a long walk back to camp because you forgot your pen!

  • Flip flops are good for the showers.  But, you should wear full shoes while going about camp.  Foot injuries are common and often serious in camp because of the rough paths from place to place.

  • It will be HOT.  Bring a set of new clothes for each day.  You'll be happier and so will your campmates!

  • What NOT to bring:  No sheath knives (or other weapons).  You may bring your pocket knife ONLY IF you have your whittling chip on your persona at all times. No pets. No electronic devices, besides they can't be kept secure in your campsite. No alcohol.

  • Plan on arriving between 1-3 in the afternoon the first day.  It takes about 1.5 - 2 hours to get to the camp.

  • Only adults may operate fuel based items in camp (lanterns, stoves, etc.).

  • The camp will provide standard canvas, walled tents with wooden platform floors, metal beds and vinyl covered mattresses.  These tests are not bug-proof.  You may feel free to bring your own tent so long as there is room.  Remember, only boys can tent with other boys, unless they are bunking with only their parent.  If you bring your own tent, you must display on the tent (with a card) "NO flames in tents."

  • Class A uniform is to be worn every night to supper and to all camp-wide activities (like campfires and Vespers).  Otherwise, boys and leaders should wear a Class B uniform.  Bring a hanger to hang your Class A uniform when you do not need to wear it.
