About Cub Scout Pack 934

Costs:  Dues are about $25-35 for a boy joining in Aug/Sept.  All boys are required to get a uniform (shirt, neckerchief, slide and belt) that costs about $40-45 - but that will likely last him thoughout his cubscout years.  All boys will also need a den level achievement/advancement book - about $8.  Uniforms and books are purchased through the local BSA council office located at 6600 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 (www.oldhickorycouncil.org).  Many of our activities for the cub scouts are subsidized by our Pack fundraising.  There are other optional activities throughout the year that do require some additional payment, but these are optional and can be chosen on a case-by-case basis as your budget will permit.  Of course, our Pack, and the BSA, never want a boy to refrain from joining a Pack because of lack of funds.  Please contact us if costs may prevent your son from joining scouting.

Meeting times:  We meet on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month, during the school year, from 7-8 PM.  The 1st and 3rd Tuesdays are for den meetings and the 4th Tuesday is the large group Pack meeting where all the dens meeting together.  Meeting space is provided at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church located at 3543 Robinhood Road, between Peacehaven Road and Shattalon Drive.  While meeting space is provided at MTUMC, dens may occasionally meet elsewhere, and also may meet on other days.  However, most den meetings are at MTUMC on Tuesdays, 7-8 PM.  Parents are requested to attend all meetings with their son (no drop and go policy).  This promotes parental involvment and understading of the boys' activities and advancement accomplishments and requirements and assists the den leaders and cubmaster with carrying out meeting agendas.  Of course, attendance is not mandatory for any given meeting, and while missing an occaissional meeting is not seriously detrimental, the cub scouting program is set up to utilize den meeting time to accomplish all advancement goals.  Failure/inability to attend meetings will require the completion of missed advancement activities at home.

Boy/Outdoor Friendliness:  Scouting has always been and continues to be a program of character and youth development for boys from all walks, races, creeds and activity preferences of life.  It is not necessary, especially at the cub scout level, for a boy to favor camping or outdoor activities in order to enjoy all that scouting provides.  As a cubscout, our Pack has only two annual activities that could be characterized as traditional outdoor camping experiences.  However, dens may conduct such outdoor activities that are within the proscribed safety requirements of the BSA.  Further, we do have many "activities" that are outdoors oriented - i.e. we encourage dens and the Pack to be involved in den/Pack sponsored activities and events that take the boys out of the four-walled arena and into the fresh air/out-of-the-the box environments.

Annual Schedule:  Our first den meeting is typically scheduled for late August.  This meeting is the Tuesday before our annual "Kick Off" meeting which generally falls on the first Tuesday in September.  At the Kick-Off meeting, we greet all interested boys/parents who want to join our Pack or who just want more information (than what can put in an email).  If you would like, you could come to any of our Pack/den activites prior to the start of the next school year to give your son some exposure to who we are and what we do.  A good number of our boys attend Jefferson Elementary, but many of the boys go to other schools, and may have joined through their association with MTUMC, or a friend who was already a member of the Pack, preference for our meeting nights vs. ther activities their son is involved in, or merely because they live near MTUMC.

Kick Off Meeting:  A great place to start with us is our Kick Off meeting in early September.  The date is usually set in the summer, but will certainly be on our Pack website's calendar (Calendar and Documents) by the beginning of August.  The Kick Off Meeting will be in the MTUMC Family Life Center (gym).  Signs will be posted directing you to the meeting place.  However, if you prefer to come to some other Pack event before then, please let us know (contactus.aspx) so that someone can greet you and ensure you and your son can get a good introduction to our Pack.

In short, we want cub scouting to be FUN for your son, so much that your son is motivating (begging/bugging) you to take him to cub scouts rather than the other way around!
