Dear All,
I hope you are all well. The details below are for the upcoming Pack Hike on Saturday, April 23rd. This is one of my favorite activities that the pack does. It is going to be a great time. We have 87 people and 2 dogs signed up to go on the trip. We may have some more that sign up on Tuesday night.
2016 Pack Hike
Location & Time:
- The hike is planned to take place at Hanging Rock State Park.
- The address is 1700 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, NC 27106-7417.
- The Visitor Center phone number is 336-593-8480.
- You can visit the Website: http://www.ncparks.gov/visit/parks/haro/main.php .
- You can click here to view a map of the park.
Timing:
- Please arrive at 1:30 pm.
- We will meet in front of the visitor’s center.
- Please check in with Shannon as she has the event list of participants. If your schedule changes and you are not coming or you run into travel issues and will be late, please contact Shannon at 336-692-4519 or Stefano Marsella at 336-749-2949 as cell reception allows. We will be looking for you if you are on the sign up list.
- You may leave anytime after the cookout.
Plan:
- The park rangers will have a presentation for the scouts at 2:00 pm in the auditorium at the visitor center. The presentation will last about 30 minutes.
- The hike will begin around 2:40 pm. We will be hiking in one big group made up of smaller groups based on den. Stefano Marsella will lead the hike and the tiger den will go with him. We will have walkie-talkie communication between the hike leader and the hike sweeper at the end of the group.
- We will hike the Hanging Rock Trail (1.3 miles).
- The trail is wide and has a gravel surface for most of its length, but becomes more narrow and rocky near the top. This trail, although short, is rated “more difficult” since it climbs steeply and has some obstacles.
- Blaze color: Orange
- Parents: to ensure everyone’s safety, please stay with your children at all times (unless you have arranged for another able adult to accompany them). This is a “must” since the terrain can be treacherous.
- Please check in with Shannon once you are off the trail. She has the participant list. If you don’t check in with her, she will assume you are still on the trail and if we can not locate you within a reasonable amount of time, we will begin combing the trail with the Ranger looking for you and your family.
- At present, we are planning to have dinner served at the picnic tables near the lake area, if that changes we will let everyone know.
What to bring:
- There is no cost to participants for this activity
- Please wear class B uniform (cub scout t-shirt) for this event.
- Please bring the dessert, side dish or other cookout items that you signed up to bring. If you don’t remember what you signed up to bring, click here.
- Wear sunscreen
- Bring a light jacket or rain poncho for weather
- Bring a water bottle for the hike
Cookout
- We are fortunate to have Mack Moore organizing the cookout. We will be having hotdogs grilled at the picnic shelter, side dishes and desserts brought by our pack members. Click here to see what everyone signed up to bring.
- If you are able to bring a couple packs of hot dog buns and some drinks, please email me back.
- We could use two volunteers to stay at the shelter during the hike to help set up the food with Mack.
How to get there:
- From Winston Salem, NC take Highway 8 North to Danbury. Turn left at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital on Hanging Rock Road. It is 1.5 miles to the park from here.
- Or, you can enter the address above in your GPS
Take Care-
Shannon
