Swim Checks for Resident Camp TODAY!!
The three swim classifications recognized by the BSA are Swimmers, Beginners, and Nonswimmers.
Swimmers must pass this test: Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.
Beginners must pass this test: Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth, level off, and swim 25 feet on the surface. Stop, turn sharply, resume swimming, and return to the starting place.
Nonswimmers: Anyone who has not completed either the beginner or swimmer tests is classified as a nonswimmer.
All aquatics activities at Camp Raven Knob take place in Lake Sobotta, which has very different characteristics from a pool. The aquatics staff reserves the right to re-test any Scout, leader, or unit at any time.

Location & Time:
§ The hike is planned to take place at Hanging Rock State Park.
§ The address is 1700 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, NC 27106-7417.
§ The Visitor Center phone number is 336-593-8480.
§ You can visit the Website: https://www.ncparks.gov/
Timing:
§ Please arrive at 12:30 pm.
§ We will meet in front of the visitor’s center.
§ Please check in with Hope or the Leader with the clipboard, as we have the event list of participants. If your schedule changes and you are not coming or you run into travel issues and will be late, please contact Hope at 615-516-8922 as cell reception allows. We will be looking for you if you are on the sign up list.
§ You may leave anytime after the cookout.
Plan:
§ The park rangers will have games for the scouts at 1:00 PM. The games will last approximately 40 minutes.
§ The hike will begin around 1:40 pm. We will be hiking in one big group made up of smaller groups based on den.
§ We will hike the Hanging Rock Trail (1.3 miles) provided the rangers feel it is safe, given it is supposed to rain Friday, but be beautiful Saturday.
§ The trail is wide and has a gravel surface for most of its length, but becomes more narrow and rocky near the top. This trail, although short, is rated “more difficult” since it climbs steeply and has some obstacles.
§ Parents: to ensure everyone’s safety, please stay with your children at all times (unless you have arranged for another able adult to accompany them). This is a “must” since the terrain can be treacherous. We request that your child be within arms length of you.
§ Please check in with the Leader with the Clipboard (or the Leader with the clipboard) once you are off the trail. If you don’t check in, we will assume you are still on the trail and if we can not locate you within a reasonable amount of time,
we will begin combing the trail with the Ranger looking for you and your family.
§ At present, we are planning to have dinner served at the picnic tables past the Visitor’s Center, if that changes we will let everyone know.
What to bring:
§ Please wear class B uniform (pack or cub scout t-shirt) for this event.
§ Please bring a side dish to go with hot dogs if your last name begins with letters A – O. If your last name begins with letters P – Z, please bring a dessert. We have a total of 95 people signed up for this event. (Keep in mind we do have children with allergies, please mark your foods that may have nut contamination.
