Pack Meeting This Week Reminder

Hello Everyone,

This Tuesday, 9/23/14, is our first Pack Meeting.  We will be meeting at 7:00 in the Family Life Center at Mt Tabor UMC.  For this meeting, the Webelos I den will need to arrive early to assist with the set up for the meeting. The Webelos II den will do the pack opening. The Bear den will be doing a skit.

Terry will be discussing the scout value of Cooperation.  All Scouts should wear class A uniforms.

Please remember the next events and comments from Kim’s latest emails.

Parent/Son Camping Trip at Raven Knob: Oct. 10th-12th.  Sign up deadline this Tuesday at the Pack Meeting.  Cost is $25 per adult.  The Pack covers the cost for each scout.  You will need Medical Form for both scout and adult.  Click here for the medical form. We will keep a notebook of medical forms for the scout year everyone will go ahead and turn these in.
USS Yorktown:  Nov. 7th-9th.  Sign ups are closed.  But I have a dad and son that are now unable to attend.  If you would like to take their place, please email me at pack934communications@gmail.com . The cost is $92 per person.  If you are signed up to go, please go ahead and turn your medical forms in for everyone attending.  We will be sending an email out to families attending soon. For those attending, I need a phone number for the parent attending.  It would be helpful if you would go ahead and send this to me.  One more planning tidbit- we need everyone to be at USS Yorktown by 6:30 pm Friday.  Please make your work/school plans now.  It takes around 5 hours to drive from Winston Salem to the Yorktown, you will have to check your scout out of school early for this event.
If you plan to sign up for Parent Son, please try to come a few minutes early or see me during the Pack Meeting.  Just like you, I need to get my fellow home and to bed for school the next day.  If everyone waits until after the meeting, then it makes leaving late for several of us.  I appreciate your understanding of this.
We are always set up during Den and Pack Meetings for you to come sign up and pay for events while your son is in his meeting.
You may pay for events by check, cash or credit card (if the person with the square is available).
Have a great week.

Hiddenite Trip Update

Dear parents and scouts,

As a reminder, on Saturday, September 20, 2014, we will have our first scheduled day trip to Emerald Hollow Mine (Hiddenite Gems), in Hiddenite NC.

Sign up will continue Tuesday September 16th before and after Den meetings.  The cost per person is $12 and siblings are welcome to attend.

Here is the information from Stefano Marsella, the pack coordinator for this trip.

Trip Destination:

·         Emerald Hollow Mine – 484 Emerald Hollow Mine Dr., Hiddenite, NC 28636

(828) 632 3394

Visit Website: www.hiddenitegems.com

Trip Date and Time:

·         September 20, 2014

·         Departure: Mt. Tabor Methodist Church Parking lot on Saturday, September 20, 2014 @ 8:30 a.m.

·         Return: You may leave at any time before closing time (4:30 pm.)

About Emerald Hollow Mine

·         The Educational Program and Field Trip lasts about 2-½ to 3-½ hours. Please plan to spend as much of the day, from 8:30 to 4:30, as possible – the more time, the more fun. The Educational Program includes the following:

o   Hear about the different kinds of rock and soil.

o   Surface Collection – finding gemstones on the soil’s surface. You will get to look for your own Gemstones

o   The Creekin’ activity is everyone’s favorite. Here you will learn about Density Weight and Gravity and what each has to do with why and where Gemstones and Gold are found in the creek bed.

  • At the Sluiceway, you will hear the history of the area and why they learned to wash the ore to find the Gems. Each participant will receive one bucket of ore to sluice.
  • Free Time! After the educational program, the scout/parent may enjoy the remaining time (until 4:30 pm) by returning to an activity that they enjoyed. The Creekin’ and Surface Collecting are free. An extra bucket of ore is $5.00; Ruby and Sapphire bucket ore is $5.00; and Super bucket ore is $15.00.

o   Emerald Hollow Mine staff will identify your Gemstones and answer your questions.

What to bring for your Gem mining adventure:

·         Bring a picnic lunch. They have five beautiful picnic areas.

·         The cost of our Educational Field Trip is $12.00 per person (child or adult). We will collect money at arrival. All parents pay same price as child. Bring the exact change to avoid holding up the starting time (we need all the time available for field trip activities).

·         Bring a large margarine container or the like with the scout’s name on it for Gemstone collection. This way, if misplaced, we can return those precious finds.

·         Wear old play clothes – plan on getting soil on you!

·         Bring a change of clothes and shoes, and maybe a hand towel to dry your feet after Creekin’. The Emerald Hollow Mine new large changing facilities are great.

·         Please dress appropriately for the weather, remembering that we will be outdoors and it can get chilly in early Spring, late Fall and when it rains. So bring that jacket – you can always take it off.

·         If the weather warrants it, sunscreen and bug spray are also good to bring along.

How to get there:

·          From I-40 at Statesville, North Carolina:  Take the US-64/NC-90 Exit number 148 off of I-40. Proceed west (right if coming from the east – left if coming from the west) on US-64 towards Taylorsville for approximately 11.2 miles. Turn right on Old Mountain Rd. (There will be a small “Hiddenite Next Right” sign at the turnoff.) Proceed for approximately one quarter of a mile until you come to a stop sign and caution light. You are now in beautiful downtown Hiddenite! Continue straight through the intersection. Cross the railroad tracks. You will also pass historical Lucas Mansion on the right. Continue on this road until you come to a stop sign and the road ends. Turn left. You will the sign and Emerald Hollow Mine Drive immediately on the right. Turn right onto the gravel drive which will lead you to the mine. The mine is approximately 20 minutes from I-40 in Statesville.

Wake Forest Football Game and Sleepover

Parents,

I have pasted the email I received today regarding Saturday’s Scout Day at WF. You will see below he talks about hat vouchers.  I still have some after making sure all kids had one.  Just let me know or find me to get another voucher.  You can redeem the vouchers until 2nd quarter, but I think Adam is trying to accommodate scouts and families by being available before the game for those without vouchers.  Some of you have asked about the drop off/set up of tents.  The only thing you will be able to do early is drop your stuff off from 3:30-5:30 at the baseball field, you will not be able to set it up.  The rain plan is for us to move over to the coliseum.  You may just want to wait until after the game when you can drive your car to the field.  This way if they do change venue, you don’t have to load/unload again.

It has been decided for boys to wear Class B shirts which is t-shirts- not uniform shirt.

My cell number is 671-5915.  I will not be available by cell Saturday afternoon due to a funeral.  If you need to contact me, please do so early Saturday or after 5:00 Saturday.

Message from Adam Rich:

Good afternoon, we are 2 days away from the 2014 Wake Forest Scout Day and I wanted to send one last informational email for everyone, I do have a couple updates:

-The Youth Parade that was scheduled before the day has been canceled. The parade was suppose to be a celebration of numerous Youth Groups in the area, and unfortunately we did not get the turn out from the other groups.

-The Hat Vouchers can be redeemed from 5:45-6:15 under the Scoreboard on the South end of the stadium. I will be there during that time to hand out the hats. If you have season ticket holders in your group that you did not need to order a ticket for, please let me know so I can have enough for everyone.

-Pictures will be on the field directly after the game, the security team knows the scouts have access to the field. You should be able to get on the field about 10 minutes after the game ends.

-The guest speaker will be a member of our basketball coaching staff, you will have an opportunity to ask questions, get autographs and pictures with him after he speaks, this is also when you will receive the Event Patch

Also, we changed the move to The Sandlot. Please pay attention to the weather and plan accordingly.

Email from Adam Rich:

Date: Fri, Aug 29, 2014 at 9:51 AM
Subject: Wake Forest Scout Day
To: Pack 934 Communications <pack934communications@gmail.com>

Good morning, we are extremely excited about the upcoming Scout Day next Saturday night! I have attached a schedule of events for the night and Sunday morning. We have added a youth parade before the game where the scouts will be able to walk on the field before the game while the band is performing (details on where to meet are on the schedule).

Also, a couple reminders while camping in the baseball stadium; no campfires, camp stoves or any other cooking devise is allowed on the baseball field. Some groups will be arriving early and cooking/tailgating pregame and some will be getting food in the stadium.  You are allowed to bring snacks to the baseball stadium.  Also, no tent stakes on the field.

You can park in the LJVM Lot for $10 per vehicle (we use the Baseball Lot as Season Ticket Holder Parking). I will be at the Baseball Stadium for equipment drop off from 3:30-5:30, you can walk the equipment over during that time.  You will be able to move your vehicle from the LJVM Lot to the Baseball Lot later that evening (most likely during the movie).

We are currently finalizing the guest speaker and once they are confirmed I will email everyone. In the event/threat of severe weather, we will move the event to the LJVM Coliseum. Let me know if you have any questions!

Cub Scout Meetings This Week – Reminder

Dear parents,

It’s a new cub scouting year! As previously stated in Kim’s message last week, this coming Tuesday, Aug. 26th, we will have our first Den meetings at 7:00 pm.    Some rooms may have changed but we will get you to the right place Tuesday night. We are excited to see you and your scout(s) there.

Sept. 2nd will be our Kickoff night.  We hope that your scout will invite others to come, check us out and hopefully join!  We will be meeting at 7:00.

Kim has football tickets to the Wake Forest game on Sept. 6th.  If you ordered tickets you may pick them up from her on Tuesday night.  If you did not order tickets but would like to go, they are reserving a few seats near us.  The cost is $16 and you can sign up Tuesday night. They are finalizing the details for the campout on the baseball field that evening.  Since the game is at 6:30, they are making plans for us to be able to drop off our camping gear prior to the game.  You will not be able to park at the baseball field until after the game though.  As the details are finalized and sent to Kim, she will forward them to you.  As perviously mentioned, if you have game tickets already you are welcome to stay at the campout for no additional charge, but please let Kim know as soon as you can.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year in Scouting!  See you Tuesday night.
