Cub Scout Service Project with Maple Springs UMC – This Sunday, 12-6, 2 PM – 4 PM

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. I know we said that we were taking a break for the rest of December until January 5th but something came up that I wanted to make you aware of.
Many of our dens have requirements for service hours. I know that the Wolves (2nd grade) and the Bears (3rd grade) have service hour requirements for particular loops. So when these opportunities come up, we try to grab them for the pack and sometimes the notice is short.
We have been asked by Maple Springs UMC (2569 Reynolda Road) to spread some mulch on the preschool playground. The weather looks like it will be good this Sunday – right now – a high of 57 and sunny. So we have set up a time of this Sunday, December 6th, 2 PM – 4 PM to spread mulch.
The mulch is already there and the church has a couple of wheelbarrows and shovels on site. So if you and your scout are available this Sunday, please email or text me and let me know if you are able to participate. Please bring work gloves, shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows, if you have them. Please wear a class B uniform, Cub Scout t-shirt or any other t-shirt.
We plan to meet in the parking lot on left side of the church if you are facing the church.
Take care-

Airbound Party Changes – Please Read

Hello Everyone,
I am happy to say that many families decided to join us at Airbound since I sent out the reminder message this afternoon. Our numbers have really jumped up. You know I love a big party!
I updated Airbound about our change in number and they share my concerns about checking our large group in quickly. They suggest that in order to ease the check in process, that we arrive early – as close to 6:00 PM as possible and Airbound has asked us to bring printed waviers (even though we have them on file). Airbound assures me that having a paper copy will speed up our check in process so the boys can make the most out of their jump time.
Please click here for the electronic Airbound Wavier.  Please fill it out and bring it with you on Tuesday.
Take care-
Shannon

Cub Scout Webelo I Aircare Tour

Dear Webelo I Family,

I hope you are all well. I know Brad mentioned to some of you about making a den trip to tour a medical care air transport facility as a part of the First Responder loop.  Brad and Dr. Hiestand asked me to pass on the details for this upcoming den trip to the Aircare Facility.

The plan is to meet on Saturday, December 5th, at the Davidson County airport at 11:00 am in Lexington, NC.   The airport is about 35-40 minutes from Mt Tabor UMC. Please click this link for directions from the church.

Please have the boys wear their class B uniform (cub scout t-shirt).

The tour should last approximately an hour.  Siblings of elementary school age or higher are welcome to attend as well.

Brad’s cell phone number is 336-287-0159 and Dr. Hiestand’s cell phone number is 614-309-9859, should you encounter any issues traveling to the location. I will post this on the website as well.

Have a great time.

Last Popcorn Money Turn In Reminder – Tuesday – 11/24/15

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. On Tuesday, 11/24/15, at our pack meeting, we will have our last popcorn money turn in at the sign up table. Many of us need to turn in our money.

We will be setting up a table outside the Family Life Center so we don’t disturb the Bobcat Ceremony or the Mad Scientist. If your child is getting a Bobcat Award, please feel free to turn in your popcorn money after the Bobcat Ceremony, during the Mad Scientist portion of our meeting.

Thank you to those of you who contacted me and turned in your popcorn money early since you knew that you were going to be traveling this coming week for the holiday. If you are traveling during our pack meeting and haven’t turned in your popcorn money early, please contact me as soon as possible so we will make other arrangements, all money must be turned in by December 1st. Please remember that we are not taking money at the Airbound Party.

See you on Tuesday Night!

Take care,
Shannon

The Mad Scientist Comes To Our Cub Scout Pack Meeting This Coming Tuesday, 11/24/15

Hello All,

I hope you are all well. We are having our pack meeting this coming Tuesday, 11/24/15. We will meet at 7:00 PM in the Family Life Center at Mt Tabor UMC. We will have our awards ceremony 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM. Then we will have a visit from the Mad Scientist 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM. Think Slime! Yes, the boys will be making slime and they get to take it home!

I wish we could have this program open for siblings too but we were quoted a price for just the scouts including supplies. Please do not bring siblings expecting to participate, the scientist will not have enough supplies for extra children and we do not want a child to be unhappy. We will have other activities that the siblings can participate in the future.

Please remember to bring your Popcorn Money for turn in. We will have a table outside the family life center. If you aren’t able to bring your popcorn money, please contact me to make other arrangements.

Sign ups for Events/Trips: Currently, we are signing up for the Airbound Scout Party (free) and the Pack Ski & Snowboarding Day Trip. If you are thinking of bringing your scout to Airbound, please sign up or contact me, I am trying to get a solid headcount to use for ordering the cake.

Webelo Camping Trip – Better Directions

Hi All,

I hope you are well. I found my information from the Davy Jones Rendezvous (a BSA venture crew/ship competition) at Raven Point and Hagan from a couple years ago and here are better directions to the Raven Point.

From Winston-Salem: Travel south on U.S. 52 and take exit 84 Linwood Road.  At the stop sign turn left back across the U.S. 52 bridge and travel approximately 200 yards to the next stop sign near the airport.  Turn right on Hargrave Road.  Stay on this road for 9.2 miles.  The name of this road will change a few times from Hargrave Road to Old Linwood Road to Linwood-Southmont Road, but it is the same road.  After 9.2 miles the road will intersect and end at Hwy 8 in Southmont.  Turn right on Hwy 8 and travel for approximately 0.8 miles to the Wildlife Access Road and turn right.  Go approximately 0.3 miles on Wildlife Access Road and go straight into the Yachtsman’s Cove development on Scout Road.  Follow Scout Road for approximately 0.75 miles.  The entrance to Charles T. Hagan Sea Scout Base is on the left.  The entrance to Camp Raven Point is further down Scout Road on the right, next to the Skipjack Marina.

I hope this helps.

Take care-

Shannon

Cub Scout God & Family Class, Den Meetings & Popcorn Money Turn-in This Coming Tuesday, 11/17/15

Dear All,
I hope you are well. This coming week, our pack will have the last God & Family Class at 6:00 PM, Den Meetings at 7:00 PM and popcorn money turn-in.
God & Family Class: The God and Family group will meet as we have been through the series: pineapples begin in the 3rd floor library and pepperonis begin room 307 at 6:00 pm. For this last class Stacy usually orders Pizza for the boys. So the boys need to come to class hungry! This never seems to be a problem ☺.
Den Meetings: Our den meetings begin at 7:00 PM, please enter through the church office unless you are a Webelo I family and then you may want to use the old scout entrance. We will be meeting in the following locations:
(First grade) Tiger Den – Room 301
(Second grade) Wolf Den – Fellowship Hall
(Third grade) Bear Den – Room 306
(Fourth grade) Webelo I Den – Boy Scout Room – room 120
(Fifth grade) Webelo II Den – Room 305
Popcorn Money: We are also taking popcorn money this Tuesday at the sign up table in room 309. This room is located upstairs on the third floor. The sign up table will not be floating this week but will be stationary on the third floor.
We have one change on the popcorn money intake plan. We are concerned about taking large quantities of money in a public place like Airbound on 12/1. Please try to turn in your popcorn money by the pack meeting on 11/24/15. If you can’t work that out, please contact me and we will make other arrangements. The drop dead date on Popcorn Money turn in is still December 1st because we have to pay the Old Hickory Council.
Sign ups for Events/Trips: Current sign ups are for the Webelo I and Webelo II Camping Trip and the Airbound Scout Party.   Both of these events are free for our scouts to participate.  This Tuesday is the deadline to sign up for the Webelo Camping Trip. The Webelo Camping Trip also includes some nerf gun activities! The pack provides the darts.

If you are thinking of bringing your scout to Airbound, please sign up, I am trying to get a solid headcount to use for ordering the cake.w
We have sign up for a new event starting this week –  On January 19th (teacher workday on the WS/FCS School Calendar), we are planning a pack Ski/Snowboard day trip to Sugar Mountain! The scout rate is amazing. It is $25 per person for skiing and $30 per person to snowboard. This rate includes equipment rental, Skiing/Snowboarding all day, and a lesson of an hour and a half. There is one restriction – the children must be 8 years old and up to participate. You can not do both skiing and snowboarding under the group rate, you have to pick one. If you want to switch during the trip, you will need to pay the regular rate.

I will not be at Scouts on Tuesday, my daughter has a band concert, so if you have questions, please email, call or text me. Greg, Amanda & Carmen will be there at the sign up table but their main interest will be taking popcorn money.

Webelo Camping Trip Reminder & Details

Dear All,

I hope you are all well. Our Webelo Camping Trip is coming up on Friday, 11/20/15. We will be camping in the bunkhouse at Raven Point, a local Sea Base. The actual address is 1 Raven Point Rd, Southmont, NC  27351. However for the purposes of GPS systems, please use address for Hagan Sea Base (across the street) 781 Scout Road, Lexington, NC 27292. Upon arrival there are signs to direct you to Raven Point.

The drive time is approximately an hour from Mt Tabor UMC.

Our Webelo leaders are encouraging the parents to let the boys camp with just the leaders and give the parents the weekend off.

I know some of our parents were on the fence about sending their sons camping “on their own”. Please email me back and verify with me as to if you are camping with your son or not. We need a solid headcount for food.

Those boys traveling without parents should be at Mt Tabor UMC by 5:30 pm. Friday dinner is on your own so please be sure your scout has eaten before you bring them to the church.

Boys traveling with a parent should arrive at the Sea Base by 7:00 pm.

The menu for the trip is:

  • Breakfast on Saturday, – grits, oatmeal, oranges, bananas & orange juice
  • Lunch on Saturday – sandwiches – Various lunch meats and american cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, condiments, chips, apples and lemonade
  • Dinner on Saturday Walking Tacos, which are essentially loaded nachos in a Fritos bag.  We would have Frito chips, ground beef, refried beans, Colby jack cheese, lettuce tomatoes, salsa and onion.
  • Breakfast on Sunday – grits, oatmeal, oranges, bananas & orange juice and whatever leftovers the kids request.

The boys should bring:

  • Sleeping bags
  • Pillows
  • Clothes
  • Jacket
  • Pullover
  • Socks
  • Shoes – extra pair
  • Water bottle
  • Flashlight/head lamp
  • toothbrush/paste
  • Small towel
  • Pocket Knife
  • Nerf Gun that shoots small standard darts (don’t bring darts)

Some of the activities for the weekend include hiking, beginning and advanced fire building and Nerf Gun activities. Please have your scout bring a nerf gun that shoots small standard darts. DO NOT BRING DARTS, THE PACK WILL PROVIDE THEM.

For those boys traveling without parents, we are planning to arrive back in town around 10:00 AM on Sunday morning. Here is the tricky part: Due to the church services and construction space restriction, we will meet across the street from the church at Leinbach park.  We will contact you if there are return arrival changes in timing.

Take care-
Shannon
